It's International Year of Reading #internationalyearofreading
What's happening at Caythorpe....
Caythorpe Primary School have been working hard to promote a reading for pleasure culture across their school with a wide variety of activities:
DEAR (Drop Everything And Read): every Friday straight after lunch, all children and adults read a book of their choice in the classroom. Children can talk about their books or sit and read quietly. Year 6 children pair up with their EYFS buddies during this time to share books.
Class Book: Children are regularly read to by an adult, sometimes before lunch or at the end of the school day. Posters are displayed on classroom doors for the current class book, which also gives recommendations of other books by the same author. Posters are also displayed around classroom areas to show books that have already been read during the school year.
Reading areas: All classes have a reading area in classrooms and books are changed each half term to promote curiosity in children’s reading habits. Classrooms may also have spaces for children to recommend books to their classmates or adults in the classroom based on what they have read.
Reading Dogs: Classes have a cuddly toy reading dog, which comes with a journal. Children can take home the class reading dog each week and read with them across the week. The children update the journal with what they did with the dog and then choose a new classmate to have the dog next.
Reading ‘Hive’: Whenever children have read ten times (KS1 have bookmarks and KS2 have reading diaries) they are given a reading hexagon in assembly, which contributes to a whole school display in the library. Children are also entered into a book raffle, where 6 winners are picked at the end of each term and they can choose a book from our reading tree.
Informal conversations: Staff are constantly talking to children about their favourite books but also the children’s general interests and then try to find books to support these interests.
Scholastic Book Fair: Caythorpe have this every November in school and any ‘rewards’ they earn are spent on books for classrooms, the reading tree or prizes on World Book Day.
